BRIEF:

The core objective of this project was to recreate three iconic movie scenes with a focus on lighting, photography, set design, and art direction. The aim was to study the original cinematic language and replicate it within our own production constraints, working collaboratively as a team to develop technical and creative skills.

Scene 1: Barfi

For our first recreation, we chose a scene from the movie Barfi. Known for its whimsical, emotive visuals and vintage charm, this scene provided an ideal canvas to experiment with:

  • Naturalistic lighting that captured the soft, nostalgic tone.

  • Period-accurate set styling to reflect the 1970s backdrop.

  • Character styling and blocking echo the original scene’s emotional depth and physical comedy.

  • Framing and color grading that stayed true to the film's visual language.

This process enabled us not only to emulate the original cinematic aesthetics but also to interpret them creatively through our own lens.

Scene 2: The Grand Budapest Hotel

We selected the vibrant and meticulously stylized scene from The Grand Budapest Hotel (as shown in the attached image below) for its iconic use of symmetry, color, and production design. Our recreation focused on:

  • Pastel-heavy color palette (particularly pinks and blues) that mirrors Wes Anderson's signature aesthetic.

  • Precise set layout, especially the pyramid of Mendls' boxes, recreated to reflect the original's quirk and precision.

  • Symmetrical framing and stillness are key to Anderson's visual storytelling.

  • Costume accuracy, with the bakery uniform and braided hairstyle adding to the authenticity.

  • Flat lighting and balanced contrast to retain the stylized, storybook-like atmosphere.

Scene 3: Delhi Belly

This gritty, raw scene was selected to contrast the previous two with its chaotic, lived-in realism.
Key focus areas included:

  • Moody, single-source lighting, using the overhead lamp as a practical source.

  • Cluttered, realistic set design, filled with personal objects and textures.

  • Costuming and makeup, to convey the unkempt, relatable character dynamics.

  • Muted tones with strong shadows, reflecting the underground, urban atmosphere.
